KREWE DU LAC GEARS UP FOR MARDI GRAS 2003 "Rainforests of the World" KEMAH/NASA/CLEAR LAKE/HOUSTON - Krewe du Lac has begun preparation for what promises to be an outstanding third year. The theme of Mardi Gras 2003 is Rainforests of the World. "This is a great combination of traditions for the Clear Lake/Galveston areas," said Annabelle Ruch, Event Director. Mardi Gras, the traditional festival of feasting and merrymaking that precedes the season of Lent, has been publicly observed on Galveston Island as early as 1867 and later revived in 1985 by Galveston-born preservationist and developer George P. Mitchell. This year's celebration marks the 19th consecutive year of Mardi Gras! Galveston since its revival. Krewe du Lac sponsors or co-sponsors all these great events: Sunday, January 5 - 3 pm - The King's Cake Party kicks off the festivities of 2003 at Dolphin Street Jazz Club in Seabrook. The honor of King will be bestowed as he accepts the crown. The Queen will be chosen during the serving of The King's Cake. The hopeful who finds a small baby baked into her cake will serve as this year's Queen. Featuring live Jazz band and a cash bar. Guest tickets $5. Saturday, February 22 - Luxury Motor Coach Trip to Mardi Gras! Galveston. Clear Lake departure 10 am. Galveston, return departure 8 pm. Our float will participate in the Krewe of Aquarius parade on the Seawall, while the King and Queen lead our marching group in their horse drawn coach in Z Krewe's Historic Strand Parade. ($25 additional fee to ride on the Aquarius float). Guest tickets $35. Friday, February 28 - Royal Ball - 7:30 pm Kemah Boardwalk Aquarium's ballroom. The gala features presentation of the Royal Court, live music, hors d'ouvers and a cash bar. Attire is black tie, after 5 or costume. Krewe members will shower the crowds with beads from the 3rd floor balcony of the ballroom. Live Music! Guest tickets $35. Saturday, March 1 - Royal Yacht Cruise - 6 pm, Krewe du Lac will join the merriment of the 5th Annual Yachty Gras Boat Parade. The four-hour cruise will be aboard Clear Lake's newest pleasure cruiser, the Spirit of Texas Paddlewheeler . Several bead-throwing passes will be made in front of the Kemah Boardwalk to the delight of patrons.
